Rick and I went to an adult coloring club at a local library recently. Very informal, the librarian who ran the event was a young woman who supplied colored pencils and markers, along with a dozen or so coloring sheets to choose from. Mellow music set the mood, and tables were arranged in a congenial semi-circle. The conversation was relaxed but sporadic as the 5 or 6 other women focused mainly on coloring.

It was a nice break from our 12-hour days of working on websites and books and graphics and all the sundry little tasks that devour our days. I tend to get so involved in my work that it consumes me and I forget life’s simple pleasures. I put them off for “later” or “as soon as I’m done with _____.” And before I know it, the day is done.

There is always work to be done in this never-ending merry-go-round we call “life.” We, humans, strive constantly, seeking the elusive brass ring. All along, what we’re missing in our blind pursuit, is the fact that the prize was right in front of us the whole time.

Can you see it? Stop a moment, look away from your computer screen or your spreadsheet, your checkbook ledger or your bills. Take a deep breath; let your vision clear.

It’s the little things: The cold nose of a dog, seeking the comfort of your hands on his head and tummy. The gentle buzz of a hummingbird’s wings as it hovers overhead, looking at you in a way that makes you wonder – “who’s watching whom?” And it’s the whisper of colored pencils on paper, punctuated by the laughter of kindred souls. We all seek relief from the daily grind.

For those who want to stop and smell the (drawings of) roses, this particular moment of relaxation is sponsored by the people at the Dobson Ranch Library, a branch of the Mesa Public Library (see their link here). If this location isn’t convenient, check the website of your neighborhood library. And if there isn’t a coloring club – maybe you can start one!

You can also Google “free adult coloring pages”, to generate an endless supply of options. Here’s one to get you started – a site called Coloring Book Addict. Relax and Enjoy!

It doesn’t have to be coloring. You can hike, go bird-watching, take a drive. Or just pet the dog. (Our dog, Jack nudged me just now, to remind me of that option!)

Work will always be there. Take a break. Life awaits!
